Forbidden Rice Curry Noodle Bowl


Have you ever tried forbidden rice before?? I know it sounds so….strangely… scandalous 😉

Basically, forbidden rice is a fancy name for black rice, which, believe it or not, actually has the most impressive health benefits of all the rice family (definitely something I didn’t know before researching it). It’s packed with fiber, protein, iron, copper, AND has one of the highest levels of the antioxidant anthocyanin than any other known food. Talk about impressive!

Not to mention, it has this interesting nutty taste that pairs so perfectly with SO many flavors— especially CURRY! Which is exactly what we’re making today.



But instead of using your typical black rice, I’m using FORBIDDEN RICE RAMEN!

Yes, it is totally a thing and you must try it, like, immediately.

If you follow me on Instagram, you know I am so in love with the Lotus Foods brand, especially their line of rice ramen noodles. They have this amazing brown rice & millet ramen that I’ve used all the time in recipes on this blog, but I just found out about this snazzy forbidden rice kind and fell in love.

These black rice noodles are so thin and tender and tasty and did I mention they cook in like 4 minutes? Yeah, pretty wild stuff. I typically use them in my quick veggie ramen soups, but I decided to break away from the broth (since it’s like 80 degrees out here in NC) and make a curry noodle bowl. Because, really, is there anything better than curry and noodles?

Maybe peanut butter and chocolate. But that’s about it.



So besides making this delicious ramen, it’s been a pretty normal week here on my end— which was totally necessary after the whirlwind of my husband’s graduation last week. Don’t get me wrong, it was so amazing being with family and entertaining everyone (which I totally love doing), but we definitely needed to catch up on major sleep and just get a little r&r in after everyone left.

Honestly, the most eventful thing in our week was binging the newest season of Master of None— anyone else seen it yet???  Ohhmyygoodness it is so good! I think I even like it better than the first season, which was totally hard to beat in itself. If you’re an Aziz Ansari fan (good ol’ Parks & Rec anyone?!?) or just love indie-ish comedies, this is totally up your alley!

Forbidden Rice Curry Noodle Bowl

Serves 3-5
Prep time 15 minutes
Cook time 15 minutes
Total time 30 minutes

  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil or avocado oil
  • 1 Small yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 red pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 Small head of broccoli, chopped into small florets
  • 3 tablespoons red curry paste
  • 1 15 ounce can coconut milk (regular or light will both work)
  • 1 tablespoon chili garlic sauce
  • 1 teaspoon freshly minced ginger
  • garnish: sliced green onion, sliced red cabbage
  • 5oz forbidden rice ramen noodles
  • juice of half a lime


Step 1
Heat a large skillet over medium high heat and drizzle with 2 tbsp of olive oil. Add in sliced yellow onion and sliced red pepper and sauté for 4-5 minutes. Add in broccoli florets and continue to sauté for another 2-3 minutes.
Step 2
Once broccoli turns bright green, add in 3 tbsp of red curry paste and stir into vegetable medley. Pour in one 15 ounce can of coconut milk and stir to combine. Add 1 tbsp of chili garlic sauce, juice of half a lime, and freshly minced ginger. Simmer until broccoli is tender, or about 6-7 minutes.
Step 3
While the curry is cooking, put a medium sized pot of water on the stove and bring to a boil. Add in 5 ounces of forbidden rice noodles and turn down to a simmer. Cook according to package (about 3-4 minutes). Drain noodles and place desired amount of noodles in each serving bowl.
Step 4
Pour on your desired amount of red curry and vegetables. Sprinkle with chopped green onion, sliced red cabbage, and another squeeze of lime, if desired. Dig in!

I feel like I get stuck making the same veggies over the same grains with similar sauces and seasonings, but this looks so flavourful and new and delicious I have to try it. xo

  3. This looks amazing! I must try forbidden rice and forbidden ramen noodles! I have never used curry paste…. is it better than using the spice itself? I need this dish in my life…ASAP. 🙂

    • It’s not necessarily better, just a different kind of taste! I’ve used curry powders in other recipes, but I like the bold flavor of the curry paste for this particular bowl 🙂
