Blackberry Ginger Bourbon Smash

My body is officially back at work this week, but my mind is totally still on spring break. Ever have that feeling before?

I always have a hard time coming off of vacationsĀ and getting back into the swing of normal life. A week off just goes by so quickly and in the blink of an eye, I’m getting thrown back into the real world again. Maybe it’s because I’m getting old šŸ˜‰ It makes it even harder when the weather is so beautiful outside and my body is just itching to be basking in the sunshine again. Ohh well, I guess we’ll just have to wait until summer. #firstworldproblems

So even though spring break is over (officially), we’re going to pretend we’re still on vacation with some fresh spring COCKTAILS today! Sound good to you?? Ok, cool.

When I went to the grocery store this past week, I was instantly drawn to a big display of these juicy, plump blackberries. We are literally swimming in blackberries here in North Carolina this time of year, and they couldn’t taste more fresh! So when it came time to creating a cocktail with Zevia’s Ginger Ale, I knew blackberries were the perfect pairing.

Let’s rewind back to last summer when I made these Raspberry Lime Whiskey Smashes and they were one of my favorite cocktails I’d ever created (well, until these). So light and fruity and fresh and perfectly sweet— just how I like my drinks. And since I loved my first whiskey smash creation so much, I decided to give it a second go with a spring take, using these juicyĀ blackberries, some fresh mint, and a little pop of sweetness with Zevia’s Ginger Ale.

Have you every tried Zevia before? I honestly am not a big soda drinker, so I hadn’t tried it before this recipe, but I was super excited to read that there were no artificial colors, high fructose corn syrup, or artificial sweeteners to be found on their nutritional labels. Instead of being sweetened with sugar, Zevia uses stevia, a small plant that contains no caloric value and doesn’t raiseĀ blood sugar levels like typical sodas do.

Since most cocktails involve some sort of soda or simple syrup in their recipe, I loved that Zevia provided a healthier alternative to these typical mixers and still added that light sweetness that we love so much. And a little goes a long way— I only used 1/4 cup of Zevia Ginger Ale in each cocktail, with some fresh fruit for added natural sweetness, and it was absolutely perfect!

So here’s the deal. Basically you smash up some blackberries in each cup, add in lots of crushed ice, pour in a shot of bourbon, 1/4 cup of ginger ale, top with off with some bubbly seltzer, and garnish with some fresh mint and a squeeze of lime (and more blackberries, of course). That’s it! Talk about the easiest cocktail under the sun.

The way the ginger ale mixes with the fresh berries is simply perfect. The second time I made these, I even added in a little freshly grated ginger for an extra kick and it was BOMB. It’s light, fresh, just sweet enough, and perfect for spring!

So, since it’s Wednesday, let’s all pretend we’re on spring break and mix up one of these tonight? Sign me up!
