You guys may have seen on my Insta Story, but last week we finally got our wedding photos back!!! Our photographer was super incredible and worked so hard to get them back to us as quickly as possible, even during her crazy busy wedding season, and we were so grateful to be able to enjoy them during our Thanksgiving break! Autumn Harrison is the BEST and I totally 100% recommend her if you live in the Raleigh-Durham area!
Nate and I tied the knot on October 8th— which also just so happened to be the weekend of Hurricane Matthew (aka all that dang rain). So I guess you could say our wedding has quite a story to go along with it!
Yep, we totally got married in the middle of a hurricane. They say rain on your wedding day is good luck— well, we have the BEST luck apparently!
As soon as we saw the forecast a week out, I can honestly say we were pretty nervous, mostly about our friends and family being able to make it to North Carolina for the big day. But by Tuesday, I had basically come to terms with “whatever happens, happens” and stayed strangely calm through the rest of the wedding week.
As expected, the hurricane hit hard the day of our wedding. Power went out in 2 of our blocked hotels and areas all over the city, the basement of our venue started flooding and triggered an alarm (which went off in the background of my whole reception, but we just danced our way through it 😉 ), almost everyone was soaked at one point or another from running through the crazy rain, BUT it was the BEST DAY OF MY LIFE!
We planned ahead of time, knowing that this hurricane was coming no matter what, preparing with matching rain boots for all the girls, adorable clear umbrellas (as I was determined to embrace the rain), up-dos with ALL the hairspray, new covered photo locations, and back-up plans for all outdoor activities (which, thank god, we didn’t have many to begin with). All this extra planning, and a whole lot of LUCK, made this weekend simply magical!
The night before our wedding, we had an outdoor rooftop welcome cocktail party scheduled— which we were SURE was going to get rained out. Magically, the rain stopped for 3 hours as soon as the party started, and everything went on as planned— outdoors and all! We couldn’t believe our luck!
The next day, the day of the wedding AND the actual hurricane hitting Durham, the weather was a MESS. Torrential downpour, high winds, flooding, power going out— but believe it or not, everything else went basically seamless! We did our first-look indoors and it was everything I hoped it could be. I found new covered photos locations where we could take all our bridal party and family photos before the wedding and they turned out super rustic and picturesque. We all wore our adorable rain boots and the pictures came out awesome! The umbrellas— well, they were perfect. Seriously, I couldn’t have been happier with how all the logistics played out.
Many of you may remember that we were doing a lot of DIY for this wedding— and it all turned out fabulous! My mom, mother-in-law, and I made all the bouquets, boutonnières, and centerpieces using local flowers from a farm in Durham, as well as all the decorations for the tables and walls.
Both our families worked together to create the most INCREDIBLE cookie table, packed with 16 different kinds of homemade cookies (with options for every dietary need, I might add!). See the pictures below— it was out of this world! My wedding coordinator did all the lighting and set up for us on the day of the wedding, and I felt so confident having her take over all my plans on the big day.
Huge shout out to my husband and both our families for all their help. They all came in early to help with the added planning and took SO much off my plate (both physically and emotionally) so that I could enjoy myself as we prepped for the big day.
I definitely could not have done it without all these peoples help and support and I am so SO grateful!
This day has been a long time coming for Nate and I. As I’ve told you before, Nate and I met when we were in the 3rd grade and started dating our senior year of high school. We’ve experienced so much life together already, making this day that much more momentous and special. Nate honestly is my other half, and words can’t describe how emotional it felt saying my vows and promising to spend the rest of our lives together. It was truly an incredible moment.
Another unforgettable part of our day was having everyone we love in the same room together, sharing in our love with such joy and happiness. Shockingly, almost all our guests were able to make it, even with the weather, and we were so grateful that they made the trek to be with us. Being with all these wonderful people, I honestly forgot there was a storm even happening outside! We had an absolute blast dancing the night away with everyone and I couldn’t have pictured a more beautiful, joyous evening. It was everything I could have ever imagined!
So let’s talk food! This was a really important part of our wedding for us since, well, we love food, and we wanted to give our guests the BEST wedding food experience possible (since that’s not always the case). We went with an entirely Mediterranean caterer and had vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free options (since we had a lot of guests with dietary needs). Here was our menu:
Kalamata Olive Hummus, Roasted Garlic, & Traditional Hummus
Regular & Gluten Free Pita
Israeli Couscous Salad
Sun Dried Tomato & Spinach Pesto Pasta
Mediterranean Quinoa Salad
Gluten Free Tabouli
Mediterranean Roasted Vegetables
Herb Grilled Salmon
For dessert, to go along with our cookie table, we had an ICE CREAM TRUCK! Our favorite homemade ice cream parlor in Durham owns a food truck that they use for events, so we booked them to show up after dinner for another treat.
Magically (again), it stopped raining minutes before the ice cream truck’s arrival, so all our guests were able to go outside and enjoy our little surprise like we had planned. Seriously, we lucked out SO much over the course of this weekend. It was definitely one of my favorite details of the wedding!
Like I said, rain and all, it was the best day of my life! We are so thankful for all the help from our families and friends in making our special day everything we could have hoped. Nate and I still talk about how we wish we could repeat this day over and over again, it was that much fun!
Well, thanks everyone for listening to all my blabbering today! It was so fun reminiscing through these pictures and remembering all the amazing parts of our wonderful wedding weekend 🙂
